"Design is the act of shaping the world with intention. It’s a human capacity that anyone can cultivate.

What if we each did our part to design a better world that's free from oppression?"
A tree with extensive root structures, set against a warm, earth-toned background.

Designing for change is hard work

If you're here, you're likely pushing for social or environmental change. You may be trying to design products, programs, and policies that center care, equity, and sustainability. You may be trying to root out exclusion and bias from your work. You may be even trying to transform toxic organizational practices and cultures.

But changemaking comes with many challenges. You often face resistance. You may lack guidance and resources. You may not know where or how to start. And you're likely perpetuating harm in your efforts to do "good." Because oppression is deeply rooted in almost everything we do — but we're often unaware of it.

That's where The Grove comes in.

How The Grove supports you

The Grove is a community-centered, self-paced experience that helps you become more intentional, discerning, and values-aligned in your efforts to make change.

It gives you practical frameworks to design for social and environmental change, no matter your context. It helps you navigate through the complexities of change, especially in the face of resistance and capitalist pressures. It supports you in unlearning your oppressive conditioning.1 And it helps you cultivate practices of critical reflection, somatic sensing, and radical imagination.

1 - In simple terms, this is the influence we all carry from systems of domination and control, such as colonialism, racism (white supremacy), sexism (cis-heteropatriarchy), ableism, and capitalism.

The heart of The Grove: design changemaking

The Grove is rooted in the ethos and practice of design changemaking. With an immersion into our unique frameworks, you will:

Critically examine the influence of power structures in your life, your work, workplace, and beyond
Unlearn norms, beliefs, and practices inherited from capitalism, white supremacy, and other oppressive systems
Articulate and embody your values in your change work
Gain guidance on designing with care, integrity, and accountability under oppressive systems
Start imagining alternative futures aligned with principles of justice and collective liberation

Who The Grove is for

The Grove is for values-driven people who seek to create solutions, cultures, spaces, movements, and systems that contribute to meaningful change.

You may be a UX designer, researcher, technologist, facilitator, organizational leader, or educator making products more accessible, reducing environmental harm, designing workplaces rooted in care, or building services that truly support marginalized communities.

Your job title doesn't matter here as we believe that everyone designs. Your intentions and expectations, however, do matter. Check out the criteria below to determine if this is the right experience for you:

This Grove is for you if you're...

Care about environmental and social causes and want to do work that benefits marginalized people and the planet
Vying to or actively driving change in organizational or community contexts
Willing to "unlearn" and accept your complicity in perpetuating oppression, even if it's uncomfortable
Unsure how to get started or how to move from theory to practice in designing for social and environmental change
Struggling with complexity and resistance, especially under capitalist pressures and in unwelcome contexts
The Grove is not for you if...

How you'll learn and unlearn

Think of this space as a quiet grove of trees that you enter with intention, leaving behind the urge for quick solutions. The Grove shows you possibilities, not the "right" way to make change.

Here, you'll engage in the work of detaching from oppressive systems: slowing down to practice critical reflection, unlearn harmful design practices, and realign with your values.

The Grove is housed on an online platform that's accessible for a lifetime. In it, you'll find:

Immersive storytelling
20+ real-world cases that reveal what's possible and offer guidance on what not to do
Interactive learning
Activities and tools that help you examine and renew your values, beliefs, and design practices
Reflective exercises
Reflection prompts and somatic exercises to help you detach from oppressive norms
Community dialogues
Online discussions and seasonal live dialogues to unpack topics and work through questions

Your journey in The Grove

We'll move slowly through cycles of learning and unlearning, each released once a week. You'll be invited into live community dialogues each season (i.e., every 3 months) for one year after enrolling.

Your design changemaking guide

Hi, I’m Sandra Camacho (She/Her), a.k.a. Sandra By Design. I'm thrilled to be your changemaking guide!

The Grove is filled with learnings from my 15-year career across Google and my independent practice, having helped thousands worldwide design for change. It distills wisdom from generations of changemakers and practitioners across social movements, geographies, and disciplines.

It also brings a lens of my lived expertise in navigating systemic barriers as a mestiza woman of color, long covid sufferer, and solopreneur/activist with unpredictable income.

What people say

These quotes reflect an earlier edition of this (un)learning immersion.

A smiling man with short hair
"I feel far more educated and empowered about the many forms oppressive practices take and how to chip away at those obstacles to create a more inclusive, equitable world through both my creative work and in my personal life."
— Andrew, United States
Designer & Illustrator at Gravity Switch
A smiling man with long hair
"It was quite an interesting experience and quite eye-opening in certain ways. I have been researching about the topic for the last 2 years...and [it] was pretty hard to find real-life examples. Through the [program], I was able to see them more in practice."
— Sebastián, Switzerland
UX/UI & Service Designer at UFirst Group
An Asian woman smiling
"This program is the first of its kind, and it's really well done. Even for someone like me who's been...in the field for over two decades, I got a lot out of it...I like frameworks that strike the balance of being practical yet flexible enough to help me problem-solve my own way through obstacles."
— Liya, United States

Vanessa smiling
"This program...is foundational to the work of designing for social change. It not only helped me understand language and concepts but also...with understanding myself better — so that I felt confident leaning into the work...I would highly recommend everyone take it!"

Is this for beginners or someone more advanced?

The Grove is designed for people of all levels. If you're earlier on in your changemaking journey, it will give you the foundations to get you started and make progress.

Experienced changemakers — especially those facing structural, cultural, and organizational challenges around this work — will find value in challenging their existing approaches, experimenting new frameworks, and gaining inspiration from real-world cases.

If you'd like to tell us more about your situation to determine if it's the right fit for you, don't hesitate to get in touch at hello@designchangemakers.com.
I’m not a designer. Is this for me?
      Arrow pointing down
The Grove is for anyone who wants to do their part to design a better world. At Design Changemakers, we believe that everyone designs. You don't have to be a "professional" designer to take part.

The Grove covers practices, cases, and frameworks that connect to different "practices" of design. We'll explore the design of technology, community programs, services, policies, laws, organizational programs, business models, day-to-day interactions, and beyond.

We will, however, dive deep into the influence that the Western professional design industry has had on how we "design" (and propose alternatives).
Is there a focus on practical application?
      Arrow pointing down
The Grove equips you with the critical lens and measures of care and accountability that many practitioners overlook or never develop. This is what leads many people to actually further harm in their efforts to "design for good." The Grove supports practical application by helping you unlearn oppressive norms and examine your design work through a systemic lens with our design changemaking foundational frameworks.

If you're looking for practical tips and "do's and don'ts" on how to design for inclusion, accessibility, sustainability, or similar approaches that you can apply immediately, our Bursts micro-course is a better fit.
Does this have a start and end date? How long will it take?
      Arrow pointing down
You have space and flexibility to engage in learning on your schedule, as this experience is self-paced and hosted on an online platform. I'll release the materials to your over the course of 8 weeks to give you space and time to unpack things at a slow pace. You'll have access to the materials indefinitely.

The community dialogues will be hosted on Zoom and are on a seasonal schedule (i.e., once every three months each season). You can participate for a full year's worth of sessions after you enroll. If you wish to continue engaging in these sessions after the first year, you can grab a paid seat under our sliding scale pricing model.
When will the community dialogues be held? What if I can't attend live?
      Arrow pointing down
The dates for the seasonal community dialogues will be published in mid-July. They will be held at 9 AM Pacific Time / 12 PM Eastern Time / 6 PM Central European Time to accomodate as many time zones as possible. I'll explore the possibility of opening additional dialogues for those situated in the Eastern Hemisphere (Asia, Australia, and New Zealand) depending on interest.

All dialogues will be recorded and made available to you in multiple formats (video recording, audio recording, and written transcript) shortly after they take place, with the removal of any moments that attendees request to be removed in honor of consent. I'll also create opportunities for you to share your thoughts and questions ahead of the community dialogues.
How many fellow participants can I expect?
      Arrow pointing down
The Grove is a new program and will likely start with a handful of participants that will grow over time. More folks will join in through the seasonal community dialogues, which will be opened to those outside of The Grove through free or paid seats (depending on people's ability to pay). The dialogues will be capped at 30 people, with seats reserved for those in The Grove, to allow for intimate conversation. I will schedule multiple dialogues per season if we go beyond this number.
How do you ensure participants' safety, trust and ability to fully participate?
      Arrow pointing down
I've made and will continue to accommodate a variety of learning styles, levels of abilities and learning preferences, as well as create a safe learning environment for everyone present. This includes:
      • ALT text for all visuals and closed captions, searchable transcripts (embedded in the video player) and audio-only versions provided for all video lessons
      • Visuals, examples and data drawn from a variety of contexts and geographies to represent a variety of perspectives
      • Closed captions, visual descriptions and live transcripts made available during our live workshops
      • Limited use of jargon or complex language
      • Thoughtful facilitation practices for seasonal dialogues to ensure all participants, especially the most marginalized in the group, have equal opportunities to contribute and engage
      • Community agreements and moderation to create a safe space with trust, integrity and compassion, as well as repercussions for those who don't abide by them
I have an accommodation request that isn’t covered here.
      Arrow pointing down
Get in touch at hello@designchangemakers.com at any time to tell me how I can best accommodate you. I'll do everything possible to honor your request.
Who is eligible for equitable access?
      Arrow pointing down
Consider yourself eligible if you answered mostly "No" to our Equity Questions. Those with the greatest financial barriers will be prioritized for the limited slots available. You can review the terms and apply here.

If I learn that you have misrepresented yourself to take unfair advantage of equitable access, your access to The Grove will be removed. No refunds will be provided.
      Do you offer payment plans?
      Arrow pointing down
Yes, I can split the payment into two monthly installments. Please email us and I'll get that set up for you!
      Do you offer refunds?
      Arrow pointing down
The Grove is not refundable as it is a self-paced experience that is accessible indefinitely. However, we know that life happens. If you have an extraordinary circumstance that drastically changes your ability to afford this experience after you've already paid for it — such as a critical illness, death in the family, or natural disaster — we can discuss options to make this work for you financially. This decision will be entirely at our discretion.
      I still have questions.
